Moving, for me, has always been a complete nightmare. My family had never moved house before, so when it came to me leaving home for the first time to head to university half way up the country, I had no idea of the best way or resources to use to pack my kit up. This equally made moving between student accommodation each year a complete pain in the butt! I have learnt a lot about how not to do it since that first move back in 2001!
When I arrived on this campus to start my masters in January 2016, most of my stuff was carefully packed in supermarket strong bags, which at least made carrying it easier but not stacking it! Thankfully I wasn’t moving half way up the country this time so my stuff survived the move. I was more organised than ever before but I still didn’t have the right kit to make things easier.
This time in two weeks I need to have moved out of these halls for the last time, to return home for the summer before hopefully heading off on another moving adventure (more on that in a future post!) and I don’t have much time to move as I work during the week and therefore won’t be able to just pull an all-nighter to move and hope to be fully recovered for work the next day. So this time I’ve actually planned moving!
In eager anticipation a few months ago, when the prospect of the pending adventure first became a possibility, I started by writing out some lists with items that I would need for the adventure. I could then start collecting things together bit by bit so I didn’t have a to make lots of purchases all at once. I have put these lists in the Project section of my Filofax so I can keep them together and with me in case I think of something on the go. I am also going to add some inventory pages in this section, but I’ll talk about that more later.
This was forward planning for another stage of this journey so I started thinking about this stage and how I was going to make things easier for myself. The thought of moving all my stuff in strong shopping bags again did not really appeal, so I looked on Amazon to see if they did any removal boxes – they do! This was really exciting news for me (haha, little sad I know!) so I worked out which ones I wanted and ordered them on payday. Today, Saturday, the day after payday, they were delivered! I should have also ordered some packing tape but I didn’t think to but I will go and pick some up this afternoon.
I wasn’t sure if I had ordered the right size, they seemed to me to be about the right size, so I was very happy to find out that they are a great size when I pulled on out the pack and folded it together.
They are big enough to hold A4 items, and you can fit 2 side by side (effectively being A3 size) either laying down or standing up.
This should also mean that should I want to put some items in a strong supermarket bag inside the boxes, to keep things extra protected or together, then I can as they will fit in the boxes nicely.
strangely, just then I noticed I had some emails come through (the icon changed on my iPhone) so I opened them up and the newest on was from a website that helps you get organised with your “stuff” at home and declutter all the things you don’t need, taking you from CHAOS to FLYing, FlyLady. Some of you may have heard about this website before but if you haven’t you should check it out as there are some great tips and ideas to get you and your life in order! Anyway, the email subject was this: “Are You Moving Soon? Need Some Moving Tips.” FANTASTIC timing!!! Once clicking on the link and heading over to the FlyLady site, the article has some seriously gold help within it, so I am going to go through properly later once I’ve returned from getting the packing tape, I will take a quick look now however, in case she recommends any other helpful supplies! Ok, just skim read the article, there are some great tips on there, so definitely check it out if you are moving!
Right, for now I am going to head off to get some packing tape… so should have ordered some of that on Amazon as well, I like the look of this one so hopefully they have some at the shops!
The boxes I ordered on Amazon were these ones, I chose them because they are double walled for strength and seemed to be about the right size so you didn’t over pack them with heavy stuff but could still fit in quite a lot – even random shaped items. I already have a pack of coloured marker pens to colour code the boxes to rooms so that will help – I really like that idea from FlyLady!
